Just a few news nuggets today of some things that have been going on and simmering on the proverbial stove for the past few weeks. Many of these are now starting to bubble up to the surface, so here’s a little hint as to what I’ve been up to, and what is ahead for the blog and podcast… Continue reading “A Look Ahead…”

Don’t Touch that Dial
This week we take a look at the dial on your DSLR – what do they do and is it worth it taking it off the Auto Mode? Or even putting it into the auto mode? What are the benefits? Pros? Cons? There’s thoughts both ways and I’ll look into each and give a few answers on this weeks show. Also on this weeks show, I had the opportunity to talk with Matthew Bamberg, a well-known and respected photographer and author of digital photography books. We had a great chat that you definitely are going to want to tune in to to get some tips tricks and places to go for great photography. Check out the links in the sidebar for his books at Amazon and his website too, over at the hosted version of the podcast with the folks at Personal Life Media.
Lastly, the listener questions and answers, and some contest news rounds out the show too!
- Daguerreotype
- Best Scanners for photography
- Windows 7 – is it for photographers?
Lots to talk about, and a great time all around, including the theme and announcement for the November giveaway! Thanks for tuning in, and don’t forget to “Digg” the podcast over at PLM, or offer a review in iTunes, or even share your comments here on the blog. Where do you put your dial? What do you think of a DSLR in auto mode? Is it good or bad? Did I call it right? Share your thoughts…the listening world wants to know! 🙂 Here’s the web links for stuff we talked about on the show:
Happy shooting everyone and we’ll see you back here tomorrow!

Photo Framing Follow-up
After the blog post on Wednesday, and the number of comments received, I thought that the next podcast would be well served to discuss the idea behind matting and framing in more detail. As luck would have it, that podcast just went live earlier this afternoon! You can catch the podcast over at the Personal Life Media site here: Learning Digital Photography
Here’s the Show Notes:
In this latest episode of Learning Digital Photography, the Grand Prize winner from the September $500 giveaway is announced, and the October contest opens up – ready for your entries. The theme this time is Fall (open to interpretation). Specs, guidelines, and such are discussed including dimensions, dates for submission and more.
Also in this episode, a primer on framing your photos: things to look for and avoid when matting and framing work. I look at what gallery and show fine art venues usually require versus home or personal use.
Finally, the popular listener question and answer segment returns, with some great ones coming from all over the globe! Download today! Happy shooting!
The links mentioned in the show follow as well:
Rich Charpentier’s Website and Blog
Don’t forget, every time you “Digg” the podcast over at PLM, or subscribe and write a review on iTunes , you are helping others enjoy the fun and thrill of photography. Feel free to also use those venues as well as the comments here and contact with me via email if you have an idea or thought to share about the show. Thanks, as always, for listening and reading. Have a great weekend, happy shooting, and we’ll see you back again on Monday!

In the latest release of the LDP podcast, a shorter show this week as I prep for some other ventures, but there’s still enough material to really sink your teeth into. To start things off, Leica released two new cameras in a synchronized announcement including a full frame ranger finder camera for $6995 and a crop factor camera with 12 MP for just under $2K which will release around the holidays. More info on both cameras here
The other big photo news of the week comes to us courtesy of Apple, with the latest updates to iPods not only by adding features, but also by decreasing cost. Find out how this all relates to photography (very cool ways) on the podcast today! You can get Apple-specific details on their main page.
Second up on the show, the contest news which regular readers mostly know about except for the October announcement of two new sponsors! Find out who the new sponsors are and what will be the giveaway for October in this episode.
Finally, I also let you know about the latest project to be looking for from CB and LDP – a monthly newsletter, and let you know how to become a featured artist in a monthly newsletter. Details in the podcast so be sure to tune in and catch all the details today!
We cover the usual spate of listener Questions and Answers, so here’s the links to help answer the issues in this weeks show:
I’d also like to give some special cross-promo props to Kerry Garrison of Camera Dojo last week to talk about the Canon 7D! It was a lot of fun, and I would encourage anyone looking to add photography-related podcasts to their listening libraries to visit Camera Dojo and pick that up today! (Also, while you are there, don’t forget to say hey in his community too as he’s got a lot of great resources available. His website is linked here.)
That’s enough news and excitement for one day, so make sure to stop back in tomorrow for more photography news and info as we head into the tail end of summer weekend photography fun. Happy shooting all! Don’t forget to visit the Podcast site here and Digg it! (Or download through iTunes) and we’ll see you back here tomorrow!
Not sure where to begin really – this is all kind of surreal, because I really didn’t think that this milestone would see me where things are today with the blog. Needless to say, the blog has succeeded beyond my wildest expectations, so thanks to everyone who’s made that possible. Without further ado, here’s the big news (via YouTube video, so feed readers, stop in and get the news by taking a few minutes out of your day for this exciting video news bulletin!):

Great Scott, Mat, and Contests, Oh My!
Heh, cheesy headline, but they all seam together on this week’s episode of Learning Digital Photography! Yup, the podcast is done, and for those that didn’t catch my Twitter tease, this week I had the distinct pleasure of talking with none other than Scott Bourne on the show! If you don’t know who Scott Bourne is, then you’re living in a cave.
Scott is a regular contributor to Mac Break Weekly, This Week in Photography, and owner/operator of PhotoFocus. You can find him there, via his Bourne Media Group online presence and a bazillion other places like Photoshop World, Aperture Nature Photography Workshops, Bosque Del Apache, and much much more. I could link to it all but that would take an entire post of it’s own, so will point you to his main presence at Photofocus and Twitter:

http://www.twitter.com/scottbourne
We had a great talk on this week’s show, covering his photo background from Motocross to Wedding work, and of course his Avian work as well. We took a look at a little of the gear side, got some nuggets on branding and the business side, and even had a chance for a couple twitter questions. Great stuff and all packed into a mere 30 minute interview! Thanks again to Scott for taking the time to talk to me on the podcast!
Other content from the show includes a discussion on some of the things to consider on matting and framing (hence mats in the title), and an in-depth look at the finalists from the last LDP contest. There’s also nuggets and links for other contests out on the web as well as what to look for in future LDP contests, so some teaser stuff there too. All in all, a great (but long) show so grab it from your preferred source point, whether with the folks at PLM, or in iTunes!
Here’s the links, as promised from the show!

Gear: Ring Flash
Technique: Causes of Blur

So, there’s the link love for the show – it was a lof of fun this week, but the weekend is almost upon us. This Saturday it’s another photoshoot with the Meetup Group and then some night photography as I prep for the next article of PhotographyBB Magazine! Make sure you get out and do some shooting too. Have a good weekend everyone and we’ll see you back here on Monday! Happy shooting!

Walk, listen, and ask…
Lame blog post title segue alert – too late! This week’s podcast is completed and available from the always generous hosting of the folks over at Personal Life Media, and over on iTunes, so download from your favorite option and enjoy! Here’s the show notes:
I give a roundup review of the Scott Kelby Worldwide photowalk, along with a more detailed back story on the Canon Confession, which was outed yesterday here on the blog.
Rich Charpentier of The Airstream Chronicles also stops in for a really great interview with me – we probably could have talked for quite a while longer, but tried to keep things managable. On our discussion we learn about his HDR work, his printing work, and his travels from within an Airstream. He’s got some great stories including mountain lions, sock puppets, and much more.
A couple administrative notes and links from the show.
Here’s links to Rich’s website and his blog, as well as his book, The Digital RV
A couple other things we talked about included:
Arctic Butterfly sensor Cleaner
Also, don’t forget the OnOne Software Plugin Suite 4.5 Giveaway is coming to an end soon! You could win this software suite, valued at $500 retail just by entering your “Numbers” themed photo (taken in July) over at the Flickr thread before July 31st. Good luck and I expect a lot of entries will be coming soon as people reveal the fruits of their labor, and the results of their work over the month (especially given the photo walk from this last weekend)! I could amuse you with more, but then would have nothing for tomorrow, so don’t forget to stop back in for another fun day of photography news, information and discussion. Happy shooting everyone!
Photo News, Interviews, and Contest News
As you may have guessed, the podcast that was delayed Friday is now compiled and ready for your listening pleasure. I would like to take another moment to thank Terry Reinert of TKR Photo for taking the time to participate in the interview series – not only is he full of useful information, but a great guy to boot. We literally could have B.S.ed on Skype for another couple hours if time permitted.
This does mean the hardware review was supplanted for this week, due to the dentail fiasco from Friday. On that note, I would also like to clarify that it ended up not being the crown, rather a filling next to it (my mouth is a mess – surprise surprise), that was hitting a nerve. So, it looks like another root canal is headed my way. Fun stuff!
So, without delay, here’s the show notes for this weeks episode of LDP, which you can listen or subscribe to from the PLM site here (it’s also linked in the header up top):
Photo News
- Worldwide Photowalk
- Hobby Losses on Taxes a no-no
- Online Depth of Field Calculator from Canon
- Ritz Camera to auction off its stores – will gear go too?
- A uniquie perspective on the history and development of the Canon EOS 1- line
- Canon rebates extended through August 8th on glass and flash
Contest News
- OnOne Software Contest currently underway (make sure you submit your images in the next couple weeks – time’s a’wastin’!)
- Congrats to Fred for winning the discount coupon for Fotoquote Pro
- Wacom Contest is coming up next month – details TBD
Interview with Terry Reinert
Listener Questions and Answers: Exposure Triangles, Filters, and Hair Lights
Thanks for subscribing, and have a great day all. Happy shooting and we’ll see you back here tomorrow!
Win, Listen, and Bang!
This week’s show is a doozy – I talk about the latest contest, (#3 for 2009), have a fun conversation with Jason Loucks, then tackle some tips on photography fireworks. Of course the show always takes care of a couple listener questions and answers, so it’s 45 jam-packed minutes of photography fun. Here’s the show notes:
The Third Photo Contest, sponsored by OnOne software. Rules and entry information are posted on Tuesday’s blog, and you can enter your photos here.
Here’s the sites and twitter folk we talk about during the show:
- www.css-tricks.com & Chris Coyer on Twitter
- www.w3schools.com
Shooting Fireworks
- Use a tripod
- Make sure you have spare batteries (and fully charge all batteries)
- Shoot with a low ISO
- Set your shutter between 4-8 seconds for best results
- Try adjusting the zoom in or out for attention grabbing light trails
Enjoy the show, hosted by the folks over at Personal Life Media! Happy shooting, and be sure to share your own tips and tricks for shooting fireworks by tomorrow and I’ll try to put all of them together along with some (hopefully) inspiring photos for enjoyment. In the spirit of the show, don’t forget the trailing question: What was your first camera?
