Learning Digital Photography: Episode #57

You heard it right, the latest and greatest episode of the LDP Podcast is now live and downloadable from your favorite outlet.  Six long weeks in the making and with the patience of my special guest, Kevin Mullins, this is Episode #57!

For those of you that may not have heard of him, Kevin Mullins hails from across the pond to get together on a podcast and talk shop on photography. A well-established wedding photographer in the UK, Kevin is probably one of the most talented wedding photographers I know. He joins me in the latest episode of the Learning Digital Photography Podcast to talk about the documentary style of photography and the impact that has on how you both shoot and manage your business. Podcast #56: Is Blogging Dead?

Twitter, Facebook, microblogging, blogging, Audioboo, websites, statistics, logos, graphics, web design and more!  It’s a lot to take in and more often than not photographers who are just getting started ask me “Which ones should I choose?”  It’s a tough question because there’s no unilateral catch-all answer that will fit everyone.  As always, the answer starts with “It depends…”

So, to better address the question I decided to bring in a pro who deals with this stuff all the time.  That’s right ladies and gentlemen, we have another podcast! This is episode #56 of the LDP show, and I shared about an hour or so with Kirsten Wright talking about social strategies and best approaches and practices.  It’s an entire industry, and there are some who claim to know and then those who really do know their stuff.  Kirsten comes with some impressive credentials and a fresh outlook/perspective that many of us need.  It’s a good kick in the…well, a good way to get motivated to get going in the right direction!

At long last!  After several weeks hiatus with starting a new job, and lots of other activities distracting me, I finally just dove in and assembled another podcast.  No fuss, no muss, no guests, no news – it’s all you! Podcast Shorts added to the feed

As we start drawing into the fall, time becomes an increasingly precious commodity, I am hoping to sustain the full length feature podcasts, but in case timing doesn’t permit that, some podcast shorts will become available.  These will be short audio commentaries on a number of topics, all seeking to encourage debate and discussion.  Sometimes they will touch on volatile topics, other times, not as volatile, but hopefully equally interesting.  Today, the first of likely many audio shorts expands on the lighting post from last week.

Lightroom 3 Q&A (Beta)

What a great day to release a new podcast – with the final release of LR coming out very soon, I had the distinct opportunity to talk with Rob Sylvan, author of LR2 for Dummies, and the forthcoming Taking Stock.  We talked a lot about Lightroom, working at NAPP, and took a few listener questions and answers.  More photo news, additional Q&A, and a new feed for the podcast start today, so be sure to download the latest show.  You’ll notice I have pulled the feed back to this site, and the format is more iTunes compatible (m4a) so you can now see pics and chapter segments. Just under the weekend wire…

As Friday draws to a close, lots is going on here – we’re packing up!

That’s right packing things up and rolling on outta here!  Naw, not the blog, or the podcast – always here, but with my return to a full time position we realized two things:  1.  We were kind of living beyond our means a little, and 2. The current house is pretty far from where work is for both of us.

Since Tracy is used to the RTD system now (and gets it free with her job) it just made sense that we consider looking in areas that are closer to where I am working so…the house is going on the market!  All this means that much is being packed up into boxes, furniture being moved out to give a minimalist staged look to the house.  (I guess all my photo gear “just looks like clutter” according to our realtor!)

So, the podcasting PC is being packed up, as is much of my photo gear.  I am keeping the barest of essentials, one desktop and my laptop though – so blogging will continue – once all the rest of this gets organized, boxed, labeled, and cleared into a storage facility…(man I need a studio!).  What that has meant is a light blogging week.  The podcast that I recorded with Rich Charpentier last week has finally been spliced together and is being uploaded to the folks at PLM right now.  It might not be available before midnight, but here’s the show notes anyway:

  • Apple announces the iPad – I know so last week, but we’ve got some unique perspectives to share on how it could be used…
  • Canon announces it’s now made 50 million EF lenses (we are assuming they are also including the EF-S line) – congrats to Canon!
  • National Archives is prohibiting cameras – find out why!

2.  Printing Pictures – dynamic range, papers, color spaces, printer gamuts, and lots more…

Post # 499: Audioboo Addition!

As promised, as we gear up for magical #500 tomorrow – more content has been added to the blog.  This is not something that can be gotten from the feed though, so for you feed readers out there, stop over the the blog and check out the new widget in the side panel that has links to… AudioBoo!

So, what is Audioboo?  AudioBoo is a unique way for people with iPhones and iPod Touches to share their short audio recordings – courtesy of the folks at Audioboo.fm  It’s kind of a cool concept, because the recordings (called “boos”) are typically short – 2-5 minutes in length, and if you visit the site, you can see there is quite a bit of content there.  If you’d like to pick up my audio feed from that directly, you can grab the RSS for that by following this link:  http://audioboo.fm/profile/CBJason.

The whole premise behind this is that I can deliver audio tips and tricks, thoughts and ideas relating to photography to you whenever a good idea strikes!  It should be a fun experiment and I can promise that there will be some personal stuff to give a little more variety too (like my favorite brew at a local microbrewery!)  Fair warning – as football season rapidly approaches, you may here more Broncos talk too!  I’ll try to stay on point with photography ideas though, so either pick up the feed there, or (preferrably) visit the blog regularly for content updates.  This is definitely in a beta stage and may grow or fade away depending on interest, time, and other factors.

In other news, I’ve had a number of people as about photos taken from the star tracking station I built and recorded onto YouTube.  Unfortunately, the astrophotography gods have not been kind thus far as the night sky has had a lot of cloudiness.  Hopefully this weekend will be more favorable – but I am planning on packing it into the bottom of my checked back on my upcoming trip.

Speaking of which, thanks to everyone who gave their thoughts on what the last book should be for the trip.  I’ll likely be making my book purchases through Amazon this weekend (unless the library comes through for me again! 🙂 ), and I’ll have an announcement on Monday of who wins the B&H gift card, so be sure to stay tuned for that!

Given the title of this post – you should at least have an idea of what’s coming tomorrow – but it’s a two-fold announcement, and because it’s just so cool, I am going to be announcing something big for the September Giveaway too!  And how’s that for a great segue to let you know that there is little time left in the August Giveaway – where you can Win a Wacom!  (Click the link for the Flickr thread and details.)

Monday Morning Quarterback

After a rather exciting weekend photographically I thought today might be a fun way to share my experiences with the readership in the form of an audio podcast!  That’s right, I am going to try and get established again with a weekly podcast you can listen to.  Today, I talk about my experiences with the Colorado Strobist group over on Flickr.  Also, I hit on the subject of learning on your own versus in a community.  It’s kind of an interesting mix of two related schools of thought, and hopefully will get me back on the band wagon for audio podcasts on a regular basis.  You’ll recognize the theme music, and that should stay consistent, but it will likely stay in audio format for the forseeable future.

For a few of my shots from the outing, stop over at the Flickr pool and look at the contributions from CB_Jason.  It’s always fun to get feedback, and I do listen to what everyone has to say.  I thought the lighting was good, but my post processing left a little to be desired (in retrospect).  Comes from having not the best monitor to work with in my 5 year old Dell 19″!

Anyway, give a listen, it’s much more portable now, and I only ramble on for about 5 minutes or so.  Let me know what you think and if there are any subjects you would like to see discussed in future episodes!  Happy shooting, and I’ll have another new topic for your reading pleasure back here again tomorrow!
