I Resolve To…

Happy Tuesday to all!  As we wind down the Year of the Tiger (2010 was the Year of the Tiger according to the Chinese Calendar), I find myself, as always, looking at the events of the past 365 days, and wonder to myself what I’ve done.  Have I accomplished my goals? Did I challenge myself in new ways?  What have I learned?  All of these questions are ones we should ask ourselves periodically.

Setting Goals
Setting Goals

While I answered yes to many of the questions, I did have to admit that I had not devoted as much time to the learning side of things.  After spending time on writing blog posts, taking pictures, going on shoots, recording podcasts, talking to vendors, and the whole schmear, I had only attended 1 workshop!  While the workshop was a phenomenal one (David Ziser’s Captured By The Light tour), it’s just one aspect of photography.

So,  2011 will hopefully be a year of learning.  I know it seems odd that the host of the Learning Digital Photography podcast and author of Canon Blogger is endeavoring to learn more, but that brings up a very good point that bears mentioning – we never stop learning! I had a colleague say something to me recently after we had several discussions about various aspects of the craft.  His words went something like “I could learn a lot from you about licensing and copyright.”  It reminded me that no matter who we are, or where we think we are in our craft, there is always going to be someone out there that knows more than us about something.  Whether it’s licensing, printing, composition, or any other topic – there is always more to learn.  And you can learn from anywhere!

With that in mind, one of my priorities in 2011 is to attend more workshops and seminars  From my perspective, when you stop learning, you’ve stagnated, and creativity begins to subside.  What a great opportunity to move forward with in 2011!  And it all came from a little introspection, and looking at my goals for 2010..it gave me motivation, desire, and a resolution for 2011!

As always, let’s turn the question out for the reading/listening audience.  What were your goals for 2010?  Did you reach your goals?  Are you happy with what you’ve done? What about 2011?  Any photography goals for the year?  Share your thoughts, views, visions and dreams in the comments or via email.  Don’t forget to keep on shooting!  We’ll see you back here again tomorrow for more photography goodness!

I'm going on Auto Pilot

After some serious burning of the night oil, I’ve got the last Newsletter of the year ready for release – if you want to get it, the push goes out at 10:30am eastern time.  This means subscribers will also get a sneak peak of the final 5 items on the 25 for $50 gift guide list for 2010.  That final list will be released here on the blog tomorrow with full photos and write-ups of each, so if you miss the newsletter, be sure to stop in on Wed. for that.

The final podcast for 2010 is recorded and in the gates, ready to be run on Thursday too, so this is going to be a week with lots of multimedia and distributions for everyone to download and enjoy as we head into the holiday season.  On that note, I’ll be enjoying the rest of this week off (so no blog post on Friday), and hopefully get the rest of my own family and friends shopping completed in short order.  What is it – ten shopping days left?  If you’ve not started yet, time’s a wastin!

And, oh yeah, one last item to note…Lightroom has had it’s latest update to 3.3, and Camera Raw (for CS5 users) to 6.5!  You can grab the downloads here for Lightroom, and on the Raw Converter the downloads are Windows and Mac specific.

So, on that note, I am going to let the powers of scheduled posts and media distribution do their work while I catch up on a few Z’s and other things!  I will check in periodically for comments, questions, and other feedback items, but for the rest of the week, this baby’s on auto-pilot!  Happy shooting, and we’ll see you next week…..unless of course anyone has any questionszzzzzzzzzzzzzzz?

Episode #52 – Why We Charge!

At long last!  After several weeks hiatus with starting a new job, and lots of other activities distracting me, I finally just dove in and assembled another podcast.  No fuss, no muss, no guests, no news – it’s all you! That’s right, another Q&A show – the best of the listener questions answered in this latest episode of The Learning Digital Photography Podcast! It should be up on iTunes in a bit, and of course, is immediately available from right here in the RSS feed and the blog. Continue reading “Episode #52 – Why We Charge!”

Welcome to NAPP!

For the month of October, the theme of the contest series has been STUDY…and people have been submitting their images to the Flickr thread in hopes of winning a years’ subscription to the well-respected National Association of Photoshop Professionals.  I’ve spoken highly of them before and their educational approach to not only Photoshop, but much of the Adobe family of products, as well as to graphic and web design, oh yeah….and photography… is literally unparalleled.  With over 70,000 members worldwide, it’s an impressive organization and I have learned a lot from my own participation in NAPP events, seminars, and their community forums. Winning a year membership to NAPP is like giving a fisherman (or woman) the keys to a lake full of fish, and time needed to learn to use the nets.  NAPP membership can literally change your life! Podcast Shorts added to the feed

As we start drawing into the fall, time becomes an increasingly precious commodity, I am hoping to sustain the full length feature podcasts, but in case timing doesn’t permit that, some podcast shorts will become available.  These will be short audio commentaries on a number of topics, all seeking to encourage debate and discussion.  Sometimes they will touch on volatile topics, other times, not as volatile, but hopefully equally interesting.  Today, the first of likely many audio shorts expands on the lighting post from last week.

Adobe Elements 9 Released!

You can tell that Photokina is generating quite the buzz with all the product launches and announcements that have been leaking out recently.  Adobe is no different as they announced today the release of Photoshop Elements 9!

This is a great product and actually is my recommendation for the cost-conscious crowd when it comes to editing your photos.  While Lightroom is a great resource for managing your photos and doing the “quick edits”, sometimes you do need the power of layers and more heavy-lifting tasks that Lightroom just isn’t equipped to do.

To add Photoshop CS5 adds a pretty big hit to the wallet, and unless you either have deep pockets, really need it for graphic work, or have a LOT of photos to manipulate, Elements is a great low-cost alternative that gives you most of what the CS5 option has, with some notable restrictions.  Elements 9 retails for $99, but as always, I’ve got a treat for you!  You can save $20 off your purchase by using the affiliate link below (and thanks to Adobe for offering it to me to give to readers).

There are bundles and Elements Premiere (video editing) options available too…so if you’ve got previous bundled or Premiere versions, use the following links to save $30!
