Sex and photography?

The Influence of Sex on Photography

This has been a topic I’ve wanted to address for some time now, because I think gender does have an impact on how we look at, and how we capture imagery.  We all know that men and women are different, so it should come as no surprise that we see the world differently.  Thus it also naturally would follow that we take pictures differently too.  So, can we really break down how men and women take pictures differently?
Probably, given a scenario, anyone could devise a set of criteria to measure how people see the world.  In fact, a recent article in Popular Photography (the one that inspired me to finally write this actually), suggests that men tend to think of images in technical terms (the geometry, the depth of field, the aperture, the shutter speed, the lighting, etc.) while women tend to look at images in terms of the impact and the meaning of the image.  I am very much oversimplifying things here, so would highly encourage you to read the article at Popular Photography, but it does give us an indication that not only do we view the world differently, but that the world reacts to us differently as well.

I found the latter statement to be profoundly interesting… the world reacts to men photographers versus women photographers differently.  It makes sense once it’s said, and you think about it.  But are we aware of how we are impacting the shot?  This is particularly a useful question to ask if we are taking portraits.  People respond to genders differently all the time – call it a gender bias.  It’s not necessarily a bad thing (though it can be if taken to an extreme), but it is something that we as photographers should try to get a sense of as we capture our images.  So, put your radar antenna up – and look at how people respond to you.  Are you getting the reaction or the expressions you want?  If not, it might be simply the gender bias factor coming into play.  Since there’s not much you can do about your own gender (at least not without a serious fiscal investment in some extensive medical procedures), about all we can do is be aware of it, and when possible mitigate the bias when we do encounter it.

For me that means talking to women and men, and working collaboratively when the situation permits.  Surely though, there are other ways to address role that sex plays too.  So, now that I’ve got your radar up – think about it, and consider these questions:

  • Are people reacting the way I want them to, and if not, could my gender be a factor?
  • How can I mitigate that?

No blog Tuesday

Sorry all, I know Tuesday is the day for the podcast, but after a very long commute home last night in bad weather, and a morning like the one I had today, let’s just say that you wouldn’t want to hear my voice right now, so, it’s a no blog Tuesday – I’ll be back in the trenches tomorrow!

Holiday Photography…

I recently agreed to put together an article for the December issue of the PhotographyBB magazine on “How to Shoot the Holidays”.  With the compilation of that nearing completion, I subsequently got an email from Towner Jones Photography to write a guest post over at his blog!  Egad!  A guest post?!?!  Never been asked that before!  I was floored.

About all I could muddle out was “Well..uuh, I am writing an article for a free online magazine…would that work?”  Again, I was floored when he said that’d be great!  You could have knocked me over with a feather!  So, my post for today is actually to say thanks to Rob for the vote of confidence!  The scariest part of it all though, is not having to deal with my bantering, but he asked for a pic too!  So, here’s your chance to see my mug on the other side of the lens.  Go check out Towner Jones Photography today.  Make sure you tell him thanks for me too!

I’ll return next week with a new edition of Thursday Thoughts…let’s see, who can I ask for an interview?  Any ideas? 🙂  thanks again go out to Rob, and remember, it’s all about the photo, so get out there and get ya some!  Happy shooting everyone and we’ll see you back here tomorrow!

Money, Socializing, and Freebies!

Hey all, welcome to the Tuesday blog post for CB – today the latest in the Canon Blogger Digital Podcast Series is up for your mobile listening pleasure. It turns out I can ramble on for quite a bit as I take a look at three distinct topics:

  • Making Money in Photography
  • The Value of Social Networks
  • and some Free Web Resources that you may have missed

I also take the usual spate of reader/listener questions (great ones this go around, so thanks and shout outs to Marcus, Krista, and Nick! In the future, send me links to your websites so I can return the generosity on the podcast and here on the blog post. For now though – thanks! So, share your questions, comments, and feedback through the many opportunities here at the blog and via email.

A couple of show notes:

The 1st segment is a more detailed look from yesterdays post on “The Cost of Doing Business“, and talks about the details involved in creating a business plan.

The 2nd Segment looks at the value of social networking, so naturally here, I will suggest you stop by and say hi to me on The Twitter, LinkedIn, and through the various forums I participate in.

And last but not least, on the subject of freebies, my apologies for the two contest mentions from Popular Photography, but they have since closed (I hate it when they don’t indicate that at the source page!), sorry! Dave Cross blog can be found here though, and Scott Sherman/Michael Stein’s podcast can be found here. Anyway, thanks for stopping in, and as always, share your feedback, comments, and ideas either in the comments or via email.

That’s it for today, don’t forget to vote in the latest sidebar poll at the blog! Hope all your shots are good ones… happy shooting and we’ll see you back here tomorrow!

Don’t Cash that Canon Rebate Check!!!

We interrupt your normal blogging routines to bring you this alert from the Canon homefront (and being the Canon fanboy, I figured I’d better report on it here…)

There’s a link off the Canon home page that quietly announces this.  The linked page is here:

Canon Rebate Announcement

You can follow the link to confirm, but here is the text of the announcement:

November 17, 2008.

Dear Valued Customer,

This is an official message from Canon U.S.A., Inc.

The third-party rebate processing company that was responsible for processing rebate claims and issuing mail-in rebate checks for Canon-brand printer and video products (along with many other products from a number of other companies) filed a Chapter 11 Bankruptcy petition on Friday, November 14. The funds provided to them by Canon U.S.A., Inc. (and other companies) apparently are no longer available to satisfy the rebate checks such company issued on behalf of Canon and other companies. Regrettably, as a result, you should not cash the rebate check you recently received for such products, as it may bounce. We apologize for any inconvenience, delay or confusion this may cause. We are doing everything in our power to promptly rectify the situation.

Accordingly, we request that you take the following actions:

  • If you are holding or receive a rebate check for printer or video products which is dated on or before November 14, 2008, please do not cash the check, as it may bounce. Please look for updated postings on the Canon U.S.A. website on or about November 21, 2008 for further instruction on how to exchange your check for a new check that you will be able to cash.
  • If you have not yet mailed in your rebate claim materials, please hold such materials until you receive further instruction. We are making new processing arrangements, with a new mail-in address. Please look for updated postings on the Canon U.S.A. website on or about November 21, 2008 for further instruction on where to mail your rebate claim material and how to exchange your check for a new check that you will be able to cash.

Check our website later this week for further instructions and contact information for any questions you may have. Again, please do not cash any rebate checks for printer or video products which are dated on or before November 14, 2008, as they may bounce.

We are committed to ensuring that you receive your rebate as soon as possible and that you will continue to have full confidence in Canon U.S.A., Inc.

We apologize again for any inconvenience.

Sincerely,
Canon U.S.A., Inc.

So… for those who read the blog, hold off on any purchases as it looks like the rebate may not clear!

We now return you to your regular blogging…

PhotographyBB Magazine Honors

Last night I got word from Dave Seeram, Editor of PhotographyBB Magazine that the latest issue of his monthly online publication had been completed!  The reason this is so exciting?  I had an article published in this issue.  This is my second published article here and it’s always exciting to see the fruits of your labor in print.  Take a moment to stop over and read the entire issue (but especially my article! 🙂 )  THanks to Dave for the honor of participating.

You may also notice the delay in the publishing of the daily post today – the host I have had some SQL issues and the resulting maintenance made for some downtime on a few domains, mine included.  As a result, the site was not visible yesterday, but obviously since I am writing this post everything is back up and running again.  FTP access has been sketchy, but seems to be okay again.  Due to the downtime both on the host and for me personally (see Monday’s post, or lack thereof) I don’t have a “What’s This?” for this week, so stay tuned for next weeks edition.  In the meantime, stop over to the TOP Test and see how you rank!  Can you beat the high score of 23 on the advanced test?  Share your thoughts and scores in the comments section.

Tomorrow is also an exciting day as Jeff Revell agreed to sit down with me for the Thursday Thoughts with series.  He’s got some great little nuggets and such so be sure to stop in for that.  Until then, I hope all your shots are good ones!  Keep on shooting, and we’ll see you back here tomorrow!

The creative versus the communicative process

The latest podcast episode has been published and in this week’s episode I talk about a new podcast to hit the airwaves – Digital Photography Life, hosted by none other than Scott Sherman and Michael Stein.  If these names sound familiar it’s because I have talked about them and their podcast before when they used to host The Digital Photography Life.  Tune in to the podcast here to listen to the details  Their show notes are posted on Scott’s blog, which can be found here, and of course, their press release announcing the show, can be read here.

The podcast also raises an interesting question about the disconnect between creative thinking versus communicative thinking and looks at the disconnect that often occurs between these two mindsets.  I’ve not heard anyone talk about this specifically before, so would be interested especially in reader thoughts on this particular subject!

Last but not least, I also look at some of the more exciting things that were a part of Photoshop User Magazine’s latest issue (December 2008) including the Gonzo Gear Guide from Scott Kelby, and the 100 Greatest Photoshop tips!  Of course the show, as always, is rounded out with a few Q&A, and a Road Tip for you.  So, download the latest to your iPod, MP3 player or listen on your commutes…

In the meantime, Happy Shooting, and we’ll see you back here tomorrow!

Nitty Gritty Details

The weekly podcast that usually goes up on Tuesdays was supplanted yesterday by the Election Day message. Returning to photography topics today, the weekly podcast has been posted and is ready for your listening enjoyment. I’ll have some notes related to the podcast to include at the end of today’s post.

In the interests of keeping the “What’s This?” on schedule, we are now in week 18. Last week’s was in fact, the stained glass that a reader correctly identified rather quickly. So, I am hopefully going to make things a little more intriguing for you this week. Let’s see the first to identify this image:

What's This? - Week 18

Podcast Notes:

  1. Gadget Infinity is the site to get the Cactus Triggers from – be careful to order for the correct lights
  2. There are some great patterns inside CS3 (not available in CS4 anymore), just go to the following folder to find them: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Presets\Patterns\PostScript Patterns
  3. Q&A – Recording Software, Crop Factors, and photo terminology

Wrap-up: Contests, Road Tip, & Polls

Happy shooting all, watch those apertures, and we’ll see you back here again tomorrow!

Photo Galleries Galore

I’ve been playing around with the SImpleviewer Flash concept a little lately.  In looking at how others are implementing it on their blogs, I was thinking that CB could use a dedicated photo gallery to share and exhibit some photos.

Well, as a temporary release, I’ve put a few together using the Auto-viewer format.  It has naturally been customized a little, but is up and viewable right now!  Check out the images I’ve included here:  CB Photo Galleries They are mostly images of colors and textures thus far with a few other test images thrown in to determine sizing.  Hopefully I’ll get all the full versions from “What’s This?” incorporated soon too.  Feedback, comments, and suggestions on this are not only welcome, but encouraged.  Ideally I will be setting up a dedicated website for this material at some point too (provided there’s enough interest).  So, what do you think?  Don’t quit my day job?  Good idea?  Yawner?  Sound off in the comments!  Here’s a few sneak previews of what’s in the gallery right now:

In other news, I got word from Michael Johnston over at The Online Photographer that his final post on “Must Have Photography Books” has been published.  Like an oracle, when he suggests a book, it quickly sells out, so be sure to stop over to his blog to see what photography goodness is available.  It can be read here.

Last but not least, there’s only a few more days to participate in the “SLR features” poll – I think it’s set to expire this Friday, so be sure to jump in and share your thoughts on what the most important features are.

Happy shooting, watch those apertures, and we’ll see you back here again tomorrow!

A change of plans

This week I am adding a new feature to the blog, in hopes of making things more interactive, and as a means of contributing market research for the field of photography as a whole. In all the blog posts I’ve done over the past year (we’re getting close too…), the content has really been focused on information I’ve put together that I thought could be helpful to others. Well, no man is an island, so I am going to start incorporating weekly polls for people to participate in. These polls are created by a company called VIzu that does market research for a wide variety of industries. They are free to create, and can offer an opportunity for us to help shape future research and development in the field of photography, and beyond! So, in the interests of giving back, the first poll will hopefully help to show how often we go out and make photos as personal projects. Thanks for taking part, and feel free to share ideas for future polls in the comments.  Don’t forget to pass it on to your friends, so they can help shape our future too!

As always, happy shooting, have a great weekend and keep watching those apertures! 🙂
